Imani Oakley Releases New Campaign Video

Fencer vs. Fleecer highlights the difference between candidates running for Congress from NJ-10

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Today, Imani Oakley, Democratic primary challenger for New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District, released a new campaign video ad which voters can expect to see playing throughout the district. The ad features Oakley herself, a sabre fencer, symbolically slicing and dicing Rep. Donald Payne Jr.’s shameful history of corporate lobbyist and special-interest funding.

Oakley, a Howard University Law School graduate who has worked as a community organizer and as a legislative staffer, has seen firsthand the corruption of New Jersey’s corporate-soaked machine-style politics, and the ways regular people get short-changed by this system. From the way the “Ballot Line”-style design disenfranchises voters to the fact that self-described “progressives” are happy to exploit Black voters to bolster their win numbers, Oakley isn’t afraid of a fight.

“NJ-10 needs a fighter,” says Oakley. “Every single day, as I talk to voters in my district on the phones and on their front doors, I hear the same thing. Gas prices are making it hard for folks to get to work. Food prices are making it hard for folks to feed their kids. Rent prices are making it hard for folks to make ends meet at all. Medical care is a luxury. Good jobs are harder and harder to come by. But where is Rep. Donald Payne, Jr.? He’s taking money from housing developers and medical conglomerates and the very same companies, like Amazon, who are union-busting right in our backyards. It’s time we saw this for what it is: corruption, plain and simple. I hope this ad shows voters what I’m all about: a fighter ready to take on special interests on the people’s behalf.”

A progressive coalition is growing around Oakley’s campaign, including Progressive Democrats of New Jersey, Friends of the Earth Action, the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, Brand New Congress, 4 Northern New Jersey Sunrise Movement Hubs, Elect Black Women PAC, Black Lives Matter PAC, Americans for Justice in Palestine PAC, American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee, Harvard College Dems, Catch Fire, Roadmap for Progress, Building Bridges for America, Future Generations PAC, Peace Action, and many more.
