Assunpink Firewalk celebrates Trenton’s role in American Revolution
TRENTON, N.J. – Trenton residents are invited to the Assunpink Firewalk on Saturday, December 29 at 4 p.m. at the Iron Bridge in Mill Hill Park. The new holiday tradition honors the Battle of Trenton and its role in winning the American Revolution.
“This event is going to light up the historic corners of Trenton in a fashion that harkens back to General George Washington’s days,” said Mayor Gusciora. “We took inspiration from the annual WaterFire event in Providence, Rhode Island, but we think the significance of the American Revolution events that we’re commemorating here can make Trenton’s version just as electrifying and memorable in time.”
“Appropriately coming right after the reenactment of the Second Battle of Trenton in Mill Hill Park, it’s a great way for folks to stick around with neighbors and friends and enjoy the creation of a new Trenton holiday tradition based on historical events,” said Richard Patterson, Executive Director of the Old Barracks Museum.
“I think the addition of the Assunpink Firewalk is a wonderful extension of the Battle of Trenton reenactment,” said Tom Gilmour, Executive Director of the Trenton Downtown Association. “It will give the audience another experience of what life in Trenton was like during the Revolutionary War. I expect this event to grow and establish itself as another good reason to come to the Capital City during Patriots Week.”
As darkness falls, Continental Soldiers will light 13 crescent torches along the south bank. The evening also includes music, hot chocolate, and a dramatic reading of Thomas Paine’s “The American Crisis.”
