Indivisible on Tammy Murphy’s Decision to Drop Out of the New Jersey Senate Race

Washington, D.C. — Today, Indivisible, one of the nation’s leading national progressive grassroots organizations, released the following statement on Tammy Murphy’s decision to drop out of the New Jersey Senate Race:

“Many, many people took risks to stand up to the machine and make this moment possible. It’s no small thing to stand up to the machine in New Jersey,” said Leah Greenberg, co-executive director of Indivisible. “Congratulations to Andy Kim, to the grassroots army including the incredible Indivisibles of New Jersey. Indivisibles and other grassroots activists made the math undeniable for Tammy Murphy—Andy Kim had the numbers, the momentum, and the supporter strength to overcome party bosses and dark money donors. Indivisible is proud to be part of the momentum that brought us here.”

“Andy Kim’s Senate candidacy went from something improbable to something inevitable in just a few months. That’s a huge testament to the power of grassroots organizing. Andy Kim’s message was simple: Democracy wins. That’s what he ran on, and it mobilized a huge groundswell of support,” said Ezra Levin, co-executive director of Indivisible.

“Andy Kim’s campaign wasn’t focused on ‘process.’ It was focused on democracy. Democracy matters to voters. Democrats across the country should take note,” said Levin. “Andy Kim is now on track to become a unique voice in the Senate. His commitment to ending the filibuster and getting things done are exactly what we need more of in Washington. His record shows that he not only leads with integrity and humility, but with a dedication to public service that empowers and inspires others.

Indivisible Action endorsed Andy Kim in February (Congressman Andy Kim Receives Backing from Powerhouse Activist Group “Indivisible”). Ten local Indivisible groups up and down the state had previously endorsed Kim individually. Indivisible groups have been pushing for an end to ‘the line’ for multiple cycles. As part of the Fair Ballot Alliance, they signed an open letter in November calling for reform. (Grassroots groups protest likely party backing for Murphy, call for no lines in Senate primary) and have been recognized as game-changers in a pivotal year.
