Jersey City to Commemorate Polish Independence Day

Jersey City, NJ, This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Poland’s Independence. Polish immigrants and Polish-Americans have played a vital role in sewing the fabric of Jersey City’s rich cultural history. Countless Poles made that long journey to Ellis Island and eventually settled in tight-knit communities right here in Jersey City. Many used their gift as skilled laborers to build historic homes and buildings that still stand today. It was through the hard work and tireless work ethic of so many immigrants that Jersey City has become a model of diversity.

In recent months, many have learned of the history of the Katyn Forest Massacre which was a monumental event that changed the course of Poland for generations to come. This was just one event in the history of a nation that has fought to regain sovereignty and maintain its freedom from occupying powers. November 11th is National Independence Day in Poland, also known as Narodowe Święto Niepodległości. The holiday celebrates the anniversary of Poland regaining independence in 1918, after 123 years of occupation and division by Russia, Prussia and Austria. Today the holiday is celebrated in Poland with parades, masses and music. There is also a ceremonious changing of the guards, similar to the one in the United States, that takes place before the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a monument dedicated to the unnamed soldiers who gave their lives for Poland.

On Monday, November 5th at 2:00pm, there will be a flag raising and a cultural celebration in Jersey City City Hall to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Polish Independence. We invite all members of the Jersey City community to join us as we share our culture, our food, our music and our history with special performances by Broadway star and opera singer, Katarzyna Sperczynska and and renowned conductor and composer, Janusz Sporek. The program will be held in the Anna and Anthony R. Cucci Memorial City Council Chambers with food and refreshments to follow. This is a free event and children are welcome.
