“JERSEY CITY WOMEN’S TOWN HALL” WILL FOCUS ON CHALLENGES WOMEN FACE IN POLITICS

The free event, to be held this Tuesday evening, Sept. 14th, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm on the Rooftop of the Dvora Building in Jersey City is open to the public; leading female candidates in Jersey City’s municipal election to attend.

Jersey City, NJ—The “Jersey City Women’s Town Hall” Tuesday evening (Sept., 14th) will bring together a wide range of women elected officials and candidates for office to discuss their experiences as women involved in politics and government in Jersey City. Many of the women on this fall’s municipal ballot in Jersey City will take part.

The organizers, Jersey City Women (JCW), hope the event will help shine a light on the obstacles that women have historically faced in this arena and help in the effort to clear away those obstacles for women interested in local politics in the future.

Among the women running in the November 2nd election attending the Women’s Town hall are: Municipal Council President Joyce Watterman (Incumbent: At- Large), Amy DeGise (Candidate At-Large, HCDO Chair), Councilwoman Denise Ridley (Incumbent: Ward A), Councilwoman Mira Prinz-Arey (Incumbent: Ward B), JCBOE Trustee Gina Verdibello (Jersey City Board of Education), Council Candidate Danielle Freire (Candidate: Ward D) and Council Candidate June Jones (Candidate: At-Large). Former Candidate Moriah Kinberg (Ward D) will also join the panel.

Event sponsor Jersey City Women (JCW) is a grassroots organization co-run by Eiko La Boria and Monica Meiterman-Rodriguez. JCW seeks to elevate women in Jersey City through the creation of a municipal Commission on the Status of Women and Girls. By sponsoring open forums and events, JCW hopes to create a better understanding of the experiences and struggles of women in Jersey City in order to develop solutions to issues facing women and hold local representatives accountable for resolving these issues.

A number of those slated to take part made clear they believe the Women’s Town Hall is more than just one more campaign appearance.

“I am incredibly excited for this opportunity not just to speak as a woman in a role of political leadership, but for the opportunity to take part in this discussion with those who advocate for equitable leadership opportunities, said HCDO Chair Amy DeGise. “Events like this provide representation for other females and female-identifying individuals who may gain the empowerment, motivation, or acknowledgment they need to take on leadership roles.”

“Events like this are important for women leaders to refresh, reevaluate, and reposition in who she is becoming,” said Jersey City Municipal Council President Joyce Watterman

“It has always been important for women to gather together and discuss their ideas and experiences,” said Jersey City Ward A Councilwoman Denise Ridley. “With all that is going on in the world regarding women’s rights, it is important that we continue to support and encourage each other. I am happy to participate in this event with so many powerful women.”

“Women are great collaborators, which is why it is important for women in leadership to get together, share ideas, and support each other in the workplace,” said Jersey City Ward B Councilwoman Mira Prinz-Arey. “This is especially important for fields where women are in the minority. All too often it is assumed that we are not the decision makers in the room, and this kind of support helps us own our power.”

The Jersey City Women’s Town Hall will be conducted at Dvora Rooftop, located at 175 2nd Street Jersey City, NJ 07302. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free but space is limited. So attendees are encouraged to register in advance.
