Jill LaZare, former LD21 candidate and President of NOW-NJ Urges the Abolishment of the County Line
In anticipation of the Federal District Court hearing this Monday, March 18th, 2024:
New Jersey has long had the reputation of being a corrupt state, controlled by party bosses. And that reputation has been well-earned.
It is past time for democracy to enter New Jersey politics and to finally end the control by a few, mostly white, men. There is no time to delay for primary candidates to have a level playing field on the ballot.
I have often said that it is amazing that anything good is achieved in a state run by powerful people who care more about preserving their own power than in getting things done. The powerful few, for too long, have controlled who gets preferential treatment on our ballots (the county line), and therefore who is elected. And once elected, those candidates owe their positions, and staying in those positions, to those powerful few. What legislation do they support and vote for? Only that legislation that is supported by the powerful few.
Perhaps, once we have a fair election process, we will have folks in our legislature who can make real changes, like how about raising the minimum wage so that working one full time job can support a family living here? Just a wild thought.
End the County Line and support fair ballots.
