Jim Johnson Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order to Roll Back Environmental Protections

In response to President Trump’s executive order today, gubernatorial candidate and former Under Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Jim Johnson released the following statement:

“President Trump’s executive order to roll back Obama’s climate protection efforts is nothing more than an attempt to take our country backwards by increasing our nation’s reliance on coal. New Jersey has a proud history of leading our nation forward towards a clean energy future. Investing in clean energy creates jobs and boosts our economy, keeps our air and water clean, and increases national security. Yet, while New Jersey once had the second largest number of solar energy jobs of any state nationwide, over the past year, due to flagging support from the Christie administration, we’ve fallen to 9th.

“Addressing environmental issues is critical for creating a more prosperous, just and equitable New Jersey. Building a clean energy economy will not only create stable, high-quality jobs but also help to alleviate inequality in our state. Throughout my life and career, I’ve seen firsthand the disproportionate effects of climate change and pollution on low-income neighborhoods and communities of color. Equality for all begins with access to clean air, clean water, and a safe and healthy neighborhood. ”
