Kean and Corrado Applaud Go-Ahead for In-Person Graduations

Both Call for Ceremonies to be Held in June

Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean and Senator Kristin Corrado commended the announcement that New Jersey schools can hold in-person graduations this summer.

“The Class of 2020 has rightfully earned their degrees and are more than deserving of a proper celebration with their classmates,” said Kean (R-21). “In the face of adversity, our graduates will experience the unforgettable moment of walking across the graduation stage and receiving their diploma. While I am pleased the governor has listened to the pleas of senior classes throughout our state, I ask that graduation ceremonies be held during the traditional timeline in June.”

On May 26, Gov. Murphy announced that the Class the 2020 can have in-person graduations after July 6. Both Kean and Corrado have previously called for graduations to be held outside with social distance precautions in place.

“Congratulations to our gradates across New Jersey who successfully made their voices heard through numerous petitions, letters, phone calls, and emails to elected officials,” said Corrado (R-40). “While I am thrilled that our seniors will have their time to shine, I question why July 6 is the chosen date. If the public can currently gather at parks and beaches in a socially distant and safe manner, our graduates should be able to walk within the next month. You earned it, Class of 2020!”
