Kean University Board Approves Launch of Ph.D. in Computer Science and Bachelor’s in Artificial Intelligence Programs
The new degree programs would meet the growing demand for advanced technology education and innovation.
UNION, N.J. — Kean University, New Jersey’s urban research university, is moving forward on expanding its academic portfolio with two groundbreaking programs – a Ph.D. in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence – reinforcing its position at the forefront of technological education and innovation.
“Kean continues to shape the future of higher education, reinforcing its role as both an anchor institution and a leading research university in New Jersey,” said President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. “These new programs embody our commitment to creating pathways of opportunity for our students while addressing the critical technological needs of our society and state.”
The Kean Board of Trustees approved both programs at its board meeting on December 7. The programs will now be submitted to the New Jersey President’s Council Academic Issues Committee for formal review and approval. The AI program may be open for enrollment as early as Fall 2025 with the Ph.D. program coming as soon as the following academic year.
The initiatives reflect Kean’s strategic focus on meeting global workforce demands and dedication to excellence in STEM education.
“These innovative programs showcase Kean’s responsiveness to industry needs and our role as a forward-thinking research university,” said Steve Fastook ’06, chair of the Kean University Board of Trustees. “We’re creating an educational environment where market demands and academic excellence converge to foster personal achievement and professional success.”
The proposed Ph.D. in Computer Science program would concentrate on cutting-edge areas, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and data science. This doctoral program is designed to cultivate the next generation of technology leaders, preparing them for influential positions in research, academia and industry.
The proposed Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence program would launch with 25 students, preparing graduates for leadership roles across industry, academia and government sectors. The program is designed to position students to excel in the rapidly expanding global AI market, projected to reach $407 billion by 2027, and supports AI education and workforce development in New Jersey, aligned with Governor Murphy’s AI initiatives to encourage AI innovation and investment.
“In proposing these programs, we are doing more than meeting current demand – we’re laying the groundwork for a universitywide integration of AI education,” said David Birdsell, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “This comprehensive approach ensures our students are prepared for today’s challenges and equipped to lead tomorrow’s innovations.”
Both programs would leverage Kean’s substantial investments in its facilities, distinguished faculty, and cross-disciplinary research initiatives, providing students with hands-on, industry-relevant experience through the university’s advanced technological infrastructure.
“We stand at a pivotal moment where expertise in computer science and artificial intelligence is essential,” said Patricia Morreale, Ph.D., professor and chair of computer science and technology. “Through these programs, Kean University stands ready to empower students from all backgrounds to become leaders in fields that are reshaping our world.”
