Kim Guadagno Selects Woodcliff Lake Mayor Carlos Rendo As Running Mate

Rendo To Lead ‘Audit Trenton’ Strike Force, Help Lower Property Taxes As Lieutenant Governor

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 27, 2017
West Long Branch, NJ – Kim Guadagno today introduced Woodcliff Lake Mayor Carlos Rendo as her running mate and choice to serve as lieutenant governor of the State of New Jersey.

“I am thrilled to have Carlos on the team,” said Kim Guadagno. “His story embodies the American Dream and is a testament to all that is possible in New Jersey. As mayor of Woodcliff Lake, Carlos has built a reputation as a strong, bipartisan leader and advocate for lower taxes, open space and transparent government. As lieutenant governor, he will put that experience to work for New Jersey families to help me lower property taxes and audit all aspects of Trenton.”

“I am so honored and humbled to stand with Kim Guadagno today as her running mate,” said Carlos Rendo. “Kim’s vision for New Jersey is my vision for New Jersey, and I know that together, we will work tirelessly to ensure our state is once again an affordable, prosperous place where families can thrive.”

Rendo added, “My father was a janitor and my mother worked on a factory assembly line as a proud union member. They brought me to this country from Cuba to flee communism, but while Goldman Sachs Millionaire Phil Murphy is promising to bring single-payer healthcare and a state-run bank to New Jersey, Kim offers voters a better way. Together, Kim and I will rely on our Main Street values to lower taxes and expand opportunities so more people can afford to realize their version of the American Dream right here in New Jersey.”

Rendo also took aim at Phil Murphy’s decision to select former New Jersey House Speaker Sheila Oliver as his running mate: “It is inexcusable for Phil Murphy to choose a candidate for lieutenant governor who went on an unauthorized trip to Cuba to meet with the same repressive regime that is harboring the fugitive murderer of a New Jersey State Trooper. Phil Murphy may have someone’s back, but it isn’t the people of New Jersey.”

At a press conference in Hudson County Thursday morning, Guadagno announced Rendo will lead an “Audit Trenton” Strike Force as lieutenant governor, which will conduct a performance audit of all aspects of government operations to eliminate redundancies, maximize efficiency and reduce costs for taxpayers. Within 100 days of taking office, Rendo will submit an action plan to the governor with an estimate of how much money can be saved and returned to the people of New Jersey in the form of property tax relief.

In the 1980s, Governor Tom Kean conducted a similar audit of state government that identified an estimated $100 million dollars in savings for New Jersey taxpayers. Recommendations from a recent state government-wide audit in Louisiana identified $2.7 billion in savings over five years, and another in Kansas identified $2 billion in savings over five years.

In 2009, Kim Guadagno was elected the first lieutenant governor in New Jersey history. Over the last eight years, Guadagno has focused on outreach to the state’s business community, reducing unemployment – which has fallen from 9.8% to 4.1%, now the lowest in the region – and slashing burdensome regulations through the state’s Red Tape Review Commission.

As Guadagno’s running mate, Rendo will attend campaign events across New Jersey and appear together with Guadagno on the November 2017 General Election ballot.

Carlos Rendo: An American Story

Mayor Carlos Rendo was born in Sagua La Grande, Cuba in 1964 and fled the communist nation for the United States with his family as a young boy.

First arriving in Miami, Florida and then settling in Union City, New Jersey in search for a better life, Carlos’ father worked as a janitor and his mother worked on a factory assembly line as a proud member of the the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

Growing up, Carlos and his parents lived on 12th and 8th Streets and were instantly embraced by Union City’s strong and vibrant Cuban-American community. He attended public schools – Thomas A. Edison Elementary School and Emerson High School – in Union City, and worked summers loading trucks to make extra money to support his family. He became the first in his family to attend college, graduating from Rutgers University in New Brunswick with a degree in political science and Temple University Law School in Philadelphia.

In 1996, Carlos moved to West New York and worked as the city’s planning board attorney, where he helped guide the community through a complex $800 million waterfront redevelopment project. He married his wife, Michelle, in 1997 and moved to Woodcliff Lake in 2000 to raise a family. Today, Carlos is a partner in North Jersey law firm of Mulkay and Rendo, P.C., where he specializes in family and immigration law.

In what he calls the proudest and most patriotic day of his life, Carlos became an American citizen in 1984 at the height of the Reagan Revolution. Inspired by Reagan’s message of limited government, personal freedom and blue collar values, Carlos has been active in the Republican Party ever since.

In 2013, Carlos was elected to the Woodcliff Lake Borough Council, and rose to Council President in 2015. In 2016, he became the first Latino elected Mayor in Woodcliff Lake’s history. Throughout his tenure in Woodcliff Lake, Carlos has worked in a bipartisan fashion to control taxes and government spending, preserve open space, reform affordable housing policy and make government more transparent. Under his leadership, taxes in Woodcliff Lake have remained under the 2% property tax cap.

Like Kim Guadagno, who is known for giving out her cell phone number to stay accessible to the people of New Jersey, Carlos gave out his phone number when running for mayor and has remained accessible to residents ever since. He began the practice of televising council meetings and also launched the popular “council-to-the-community” monthly meetings to gather direct feedback and input from residents about ways to improve Woodcliff Lake.

Carlos and his wife, Michelle, reside in Woodcliff Lake and can usually be found shuffling their three children, Christian (15), Daniel (13) and Sophia (8), back and forth from dancing school or baseball games.
