Background:
Murphy “wants to make New Jersey a ‘sanctuary state’ that would not cooperate with the federal government’s immigration enforcement efforts.” (Observer NJ, 9/8/2017)
Murphy: “I’m biased” in support of illegal immigrants over crime victims
- During a forum at the Rutgers Eagleton Institute of Politics, Phil Murphy was asked when police should notify the federal government and immigration authorities about crimes such as rape and drunk driving committed by illegal immigrants. He dodged, saying, “I’m not sure what the right point of notification is this is,” but then said, “My bias is going to be having their back.” (Save Jersey, 9/28/2017)
“Murphy said he’d create a state ‘office of immigrant protection’ that would serve as a one-stop shop where immigrants could get legal services and questions answered.” (Observer NJ, 9/8/2017)
Under Murphy’s sanctuary state policies, criminals like Jose Carranza would be protected from deportation.
- Carranza, previously charged with child rape and out on bail, was later convicted of shooting and killing three young college students execution style in Newark. He had a fake social security number and was in the country illegally from Peru. (The Star Ledger, 2/14/2012)
