Lance Statement on President Trump’s Tariff Announcement

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) released the following statement after the President issued his proposed tariffs:

“Today, the U.S. Department of Labor announced that the U.S. economy gained a whopping 313,000 jobs in the month of February.  Now is not the time to implement job-killing tariffs.

“While the executive action includes temporary exemptions for Canada and Mexico, these broad tariffs will likely harm U.S. jobs, manufacturers and consumers.  In fact, the conservative Tax Foundation said the tariffs would saddle New Jersey businesses with an extra $477 million in costs – the eighth highest nationwide.  These costs will undoubtedly be passed on to Garden State taxpayers.

“I will continue to work with like-minded members of Congress in urging the Administration to narrow its focus on China and other unfair trading partners that violate trade laws and minimize any negative impact on U.S. businesses, workers and consumers.”
