Latina Civic Supports State Senator Nellie Pou as the Successor for the Seat in CD-9

We extend our sincere condolences to Congressman Bill Pascrell’s Family

Trenton – August 23, 2024 – LATINA CIVIC is saddened at the loss of Congressman Bill Pascrell and extends our sincere condolences to the Congressman’s family. Bill Pascrell served the people of his district with integrity and distinction. Congressman was respected and beloved by the community he faithfully represented for three decades.

The 9th Congressional District is 42% Hispanic, 38% White, and 8% Black. According to a recent report by the Center for American Women in Politics, NJ Latinas constitute a significant percentage of New Jersey’s population. Still, they are notably underrepresented in elected offices across the state. Despite Latinas comprising 10.9% of the state’s population, Latina has yet to represent New Jersey at the congressional delegation or statewide elective executive level. Latinas make up only 7.5% of the state legislature.

Latina Civic supports NJ Senator Nellie Pou as the most experienced and qualified leader who is ready to represent the voters of CD-9 in the US Congress. Sen Nellie Pou was a mentee and friend of Congressman Bill Pascrell. Like her mentor, Senator Pou has served the people of the 35th Legislative District with distinction and grace for 27 years. Before becoming a State Senator, Nellie Pou served in the NJ Assembly for 14 years. Her legislative accomplishments include strengthening laws against human trafficking, reforming the juvenile justice system, protections for victims of sexual assault, allowing undocumented students to pay in-state tuition, and many more laws that have improved the lives of all people in NJ.  Beyond her professional accomplishments as a legislator, Nellie Pou is a person of great personal integrity who treats all persons with kindness and respect. She is ready to step up and lead NJ with the same commitment and vision as her predecessor and chart a new path for women’s leadership in New Jersey.

LATINA CIVIC proudly supports State Senator Nellie Pou to become the Ninth Congressional District nominee and calls on all county committee members in Passaic, Bergen, and Hudson Counties to support her nomination. As the Democratic Party unites to elect our first woman president, we call on NJ Democrats to lead by example and elect our first Latina woman to the US Congress.

Latina Civic Action seeks to increase Latina representation through our advocacy, education, and support of Latina leaders to run for public office. We are committed to sending a Latina to Congress in the next decade. For more information on our work visit latinacivicaction.com
