Latina Political Group Condemns Perth Amboy Council President’s Misogynist and Racially Inflammatory Social Media Posts

Perth Amboy, NJ. (Sept. 26, 2018) – Latinas United for Political Empowerment (LUPE) Political Action Committee (PAC) today joins Latino community leaders across the state calling for Perth Amboy City Council President William Petrick to resign because of misogynist, racially inflammatory and insensitive social media posts directed at women, Latinos, Muslims, and African-Americans. Council President Petrick’s posts ridicule women as “sex objects” and questions women’s outrage at “Trump’s Naughty Words.”

The posts also agree with Trump’s depiction of some immigrant-sending countries as cesspools  and current immigrants as wanting “hand-outs.” Reposting inflammatory social media content is disrespectful to the women of Perth Amboy and to New Jersey’s immigrant population.  Perth Amboy’s population is 79% Latino, with the majority of the population being of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, with representation from all over the world including Afro-Caribbean, African Americans and Muslims.

Respect for their constituents and communities should be the number one rule for any elected official. Just last week, former Bergen County Sheriff Saudino stepped down from his public position after making racist statements that were caught on tape. We urge the public and elected leaders to join us in calling for Council President Petrick’s resignation.

His postings were more than just momentary breaches of judgement and he should not be relieved of his public responsibility as an elected official to create an environment of respect and equality for all who elected him to represent them on the City Council.
