Do Cardinale, Schepisi and Auth Stand By Confederate Flag-Embracing Mahwah Councilman?

Westwood — Legislative District 39 candidates Linda Schwager, Jannie Chung and Annie Hausmann released the following joint statement today calling on Tea Party extremists Gerald Cardinale, Holly Schepisi and Robert Auth to repudiate Mahwah Councilman George Ervin and rescind their endorsement of his candidacy. Ervin appears in a recently surfaced photograph holding the Confederate Flag, as reported by Insider NJ.

“The Confederate Flag is a relic from a shameful period in history – that elected officials today like Councilman Ervin would celebrate it and the hatred and bigotry it stands for is even more shameful. It’s especially disturbing that Ervin is an official in a town that is being sued by the state for discriminatory practices.

“We call on Senator Gerald Cardinale, and Assembly members Holly Schepisi and Robert Auth to immediately rescind their endorsement of Councilman Ervin. Did they know about his embrace of the Confederate Flag when they so enthusiastically endorsed him? Time and again Cardinale, Schepisi and Auth have failed to stand up to hatred in our communities, including when Assemblyman Parker Space posed for a photo with the Confederate Flag. Residents in Mahwah, and all towns in the 39th district, deserve leaders who will stand up for what is right, even when it is politically inconvenient to do so.”

An October 17 post on the Facebook Page of Cardinale, Schepisi and Auth announced, “We are honored to have the support of Councilmen Dave May and George Ervin! We are behind them 100% as well! Please take a minute to like their pages and help ensure our whole team wins on Election Day!”

Earlier that week on October 15, Holly Schepisi campaigned with Ervin in Mahwah.
