Legislative Black Caucus Issues Statement on Tahesha Way’s Appointment to Serve as Lt. Governor

(TRENTON) – The New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus issued the following statement today in response to Secretary of State Tahesha Way’s appointment to serve as Lieutenant Governor:

“Lieutenant Governor Shelia Oliver was an institution in New Jersey politics and government. It is only fitting to her legacy that her replacement be a Black woman who is committed to public service. Tahesha Way has served our great state as Secretary of State, showcasing her dedication to strengthening our democracy. Since 2018, Tahesha has been a partner in the Legislature’s efforts to expand access to the vote, and her help was critical in adapting our election infrastructure during the height of the pandemic.

“We applaud Governor Murphy for appointing Tahesha Way to serve as his Lieutenant Governor. The position of Lieutenant Governor is valuable, and our state deserves an individual who is up for the task of creating a more equitable society. The Legislative Black Caucus is looking forward to our continued partnership and working towards more progressive policies and legislation for systemic and structural change.”
