LOCAL OUR REVOLUTION NJ CHAPTERS HOST DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FORUM FOR NEW JERSEY LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT 16 ASSEMBLY PRIMARY

PRINCETON, NJ May 5, 2021- The local chapters of Our Revolution Somerset Country NJ, Trenton-Mercer-NJ, Middlesex County NJ, and Hillsborough NJ are pleased to host NJ LD16 Assembly candidates as they seek the Democratic nomination in one of the few contested Democratic primaries for NJ Assembly. Candidates Roy Freiman, Sadaf Jaffer, and Faris Zwirahn are all scheduled to attend the event for the two Assembly positions. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 11th at 7PM with attendees joining via Zoom or Facebook streaming.

NJ Assembly members play a key factor in deciding contentious issues including marijuana legalization, gas tax, and gun control reform. Elections for NJ Assembly have some of the worst voter turnout of all elections. With gerrymandering and geographic demographics, the winner of the primary election often easily wins the general election for the incumbent party.

Although initially represented by Republicans LD16 has become a swing district. Democratic challengers have replaced Republicans in the Assembly in recent election cycles. The district is currently represented by Democratic Assemblymen Roy Freiman and Andrew Zwicker and retiring Republican Senator Christopher Bateman. Andrew Zwicker is running for the Senate seat for the next session. Assemblyman Roy Freiman is running for re-election along with two challengers.

Of the 40 legislative districts in NJ, most include towns from more than one country. Legislative District 16 contains Branchburg, Hillsborough, Manville, Millstone, Montgomery, Rocky Hill, and Somerville from Somerset County, Delaware, Flemington, Raritan, Readington, and Stockton from Hunterdon County, Princeton in Mercer Country, and South Brunswick in Middlesex County. Each legislative district is represented by two members in the Assembly. NJ Assembly elections are held every 2 years on odd numbered years.

Our Revolution NJ local chapters are run by volunteers to educate voters about issues, get more people involved in the political process, and work to organize and elect progressive candidates.
