Lopez, Booker to Outline Federal, State Legislation Reforming the Way Women are Treated Behind Bars

(TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez and U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) will hold a closed round table discussion with criminal justice reform advocates and formally incarcerated women to discuss legislation Lopez is introducing, modeled after legislation Booker introduced in the Senate, to reform the way women are treated behind bars. Press avail and photo spray to follow closed meeting.
“I am eager to have an open dialogue and hear concerns from incarcerated caregivers,” said Lopez (D-Middlesex). “As a mother, the idea of being the primary caregiver for my child and having limited access to them is unimaginable. In hearing from these parents and caregivers, we hope to aid in making the transition as well as inmates’ time away from their children as positive for everyone involved during a difficult time in their lives.”

Who: Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez (LD-19); U.S. Senator Cory Booker; Ryan Haygood, President and CEO of New Jersey Institute of Social Justice; Amol Sinha, Executive Director of ACLU-NJ; Gale Muhammad, CEO and Founder of Women who Never Give Up; and New Jersey residents impacted by proposed reforms.

What: Press availability and photo spray following a closed meeting with Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez (LD-19), criminal justice reform advocates and formally incarcerated women to discuss legislation is introducing, modeled after legislation Booker introduced in the Senate, to reform the way women are treated behind bars.

When: Monday, April 2310:40 AM.

Where: The New Jersey Institute for Social Justice in the Military Park Building, 60 Park Pl. #511 in Newark.
