LSP For All Executive Director Arnold Stovell’s Statement On DEP’s LSP Remediation Public Meeting

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Liberty State Park For All Coalition Executive Director Arnold Stovell issued the following statement today regarding the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Liberty State Park remediation public meeting:

“Liberty State Park For All wants to see a clean-up at Liberty State Park that makes the community truly safe: that allows for active recreation and removes the threat of contamination from the men, women and families that live near the park and that visit it every year. That is what we were promised years ago and what needs to be delivered. That said, we believe tonight’s meeting showed promise and a willingness on DEP’s part to continue to hear and act on our concerns. I again want to thank Deputy Commissioner Olivia Glenn for her efforts during this process.

“Our position always has been – and always will be – that the devil is in the details. There is a history going back 40 years at Liberty State Park of the community being told one thing and the result being completely different. That will not stand anymore. We will keep pushing for a clean-up at the Park that is consistent with standards used in white communities and for active recreation. The fight continues and we hope DEP will remain our partner in this process.”

The Liberty State Park For All Coalition was created to increase awareness about the broken promises of Liberty State Park and to ensure the community has a voice on the decisions around the Park. The Coalition wants a plan that will fully clean-up Liberty State Park and create recreational, cultural and economic opportunities and accessibility for everyone.
