LSP For All Executive Director Arnold Stovell’s Statement On DEP’s Remediation Plan and Public Meeting on LSP

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Liberty State Park For All Coalition Executive Director Arnold Stovell issued the following statement today regarding the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) remediation plan and last night’s public meeting on Liberty State Park:

“I want to thank the DEP and especially Deputy Commissioner Olivia Glenn for last night’s meeting. I appreciate the DEP listening to the concerns of Liberty State Park For All and Jersey City community advocates and agreeing to have additional public meetings and avenues for the community to provide feedback on the DEP’s plan for Liberty State Park.

“While I am still looking through the details of the plan, what we saw last night was encouraging at first glance. That said – and as was mentioned many times last night – we have heard these kinds of promises before. There is a history going back 40 years at Liberty State Park of the community being told one thing and the result being completely different. We will not allow that to happen again. Liberty State Park For All will continue to push for a clean-up at the Park that is consistent with standards used in white communities and for active recreation. I look forward to continuing this conversation and having the community be a part of the next round of meetings.”

The Liberty State Park For All Coalition was created to increase awareness about the broken promises of Liberty State Park and to ensure the community has a voice on the decisions around the Park. The Coalition wants a plan that will fully clean-up Liberty State Park and create recreational, cultural and economic opportunities and accessibility for everyone.
