LUPE PAC: Mayor Bhalla’s Attempt to Dump Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro from LD-33 is a Major Disappointment

New Jersey– May 1, 2019 – Latinas United for Political Empowerment PAC (LUPEPAC) President Patricia Campos-Medina today released the following statement regarding published reports (see below) on Politifax that indicate Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla repeatedly attempted to replace Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro (D-Hoboken) with a non-Latina candidate:

Campos-Medina

“With Latina representation still severely lacking in our State Legislature, it is extremely disappointing that Mayor Ravi Bhalla is attempting to replace a sitting Latina legislator with a non-Latina candidate. Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro has represented her constituents, the residents of one of the most heavily Hispanic districts in the state, with integrity and intelligence. She has worked closely with all in her district during her tenure, making Mayor Bhalla’s attempted maneuvering even more discouraging. We are exceptionally thankful to Senator Brian Stack and Hudson County Democratic Organization Chairwoman Amy DeGise for resisting Mayor Bhalla’s attempts and insisting that Assemblywoman Chaparro remain on the ticket. We call on Mayor Bhalla to be more mindful of the importance of representing the majority population of the Hudson County community and to stop trying to minimize Latinas’ political representation even further in such critical district in Hudson county.  We wholeheartedly support Assemblywoman Chapparro because of her professionalism, her ethics and her commitment to representing everyone in LD-33 and we urge all those involved in this back-room maneuvering to do the same.”

According to the US Census, Hudson County is the most densely populated and fourth most populated county in the state, with 54.2% of the population identified as Hispanic/Latino of any race, and 42% identified as White, with the rest of the population identified as “other.”
