LUPE PAC Recommends Four Latina Leaders to Sen. Weinberg’s
Committee Fighting Sexual Harassment
TRENTON, NJ – January 2, 2020 – Latinas United for Political Empowerment (Latinas United for Political Empowerment (LUPE PAC) sent a letter to Senator Loretta Weinberg urging for the inclusion of Latina woman to serve on the Senator’s recently announced ad-hoc committee to fight the toxic culture of misogyny and sexual harassment prevalent in New Jersey politics.
Senator Weinberg’s committee grew out of recent reports of widespread sexual harassment and assault during political conferences, campaign, and on the job. In a news article published in the Star Ledger last week, approximately 20 women have publicly complained of sexual harassment while working in state government or on campaigns.
“While the ongoing coverage of the #MeToo movement has touched upon the topic of the diversity of the women victimized by sexual harassment and assault, women of color are still underrepresented in this coverage,” said Laura Matos, LUPE PAC president. “It has been shown over the past three decades that women of color have vastly different experiences in terms of sexual harassment and assault.”
Although acknowledging the progress made in the handling of sexual assault victims, Matos stated that issues of misogyny, sexism, and harassment are still prevalent and LUPE PAC is committed to eradicating them. “Policy discussions and decisions can only be successful when the participants in those conversations are fully representative of the diversity of the group,” said Matos. “As women in politics in New Jersey, we must strengthen our alliances to bring about change.”
The letter also recommended four Latinas to participate in the committee. Those women are: Evelyn Padin, President, NJ Bar Association; Margarita Echevarria, Esq., M. Echevarria, ADR LLC; Sonia Delgado, partner, Princeton Public Affairs Group; and Rosa Farias, Deputy Executive Director, NJ CRDA.
