LUPEPAC SUPPORTS SENATE BILL 2480 AIMED TO ASSIST TAX PAYING IMMIGRANTS IMPACTED BY COVID-19

LUPEPAC SUPPORTS SENATE BILL 2480 AIMED TO ASSIST TAX PAYING IMMIGRANTS IMPACTED BY COVID-19

TRENTON, NJ – May 13, 2020 – LUPEPAC proudly supports legislation introduced by Senate President Pro Tempore M. Teresa Ruiz that creates an emergency fund to assist undocumented immigrants with an IRS tax ID number, known as ITIN, who pay federal and New Jersey taxes. This measure would allow undocumented immigrants, who contribute $600 million annually in state and local taxes, to receive cash assistance during the COVID-19 crisis. If approved, New Jersey would follow the examples of California, Minneapolis, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Washington who have taken similar steps to aid ITIN-filers and their US-born children.

This bill is a step in the right direction to provide support for immigrant workers and their families who have been impacted by COVID-19, but have been left out of any federal relief, despite the fact that they pay taxes via their ITIN numbers.

LUPEPAC thanks Senator Ruiz and the New Jersey State Senate leadership for their commitment to advancing this critical policy measure. As an organization, we are committed to continually advocating for the inclusion of all in our Latino community, including our undocumented immigrant families, in any COVID-19 relief and income replacement measures.

We look forward to working with the Murphy Administration and the leadership in the State Assembly to make this legislation a reality.

Immigrant workers are essential workers. In order for New Jersey to fully recover from this health crisis, all communities must be included in the recovery aid and relief.
