STATEMENT: Make the Road New Jersey Responds to Gov. Murphy Executive Order on Immigrant Integration

Immigrant and Workers’ Rights Organization Applauds the Creation of an Office of New Americans and Restoration of Refugee Resettlement Program

(Elizabeth, NJ) July 4, 2019: On behalf of the members of Make the Road New Jersey, an immigrant and workers rights organization, Lorenza Garcia, a member leader, issued the following statement in response to Gov. Murphy’s Executive Order #74 to launch an Office of New Americans in New Jersey, and his announcement that New Jersey will restore the state’s refugee resettlement program:

“In a week where the Trump administration has threatened mass deportations across the country, we welcome Governor Murphy’s announcement that the state of New Jersey will create an Office of New Americans and restore the refugee resettlement program. Immigrants are our strength. We hope that the office will support immigrant families to access key services, like naturalization, and that it will also ensure our state uses every power at its disposal to fight back against xenophobia and family separation. We applaud Governor Murphy’s bold leadership on immigrant rights and look forward to working together with to make New Jersey a more just and inclusive state.”
