Make the Road New Jersey Responds to the Introduction of the Dream Act in the U.S. Senate

Elizabeth, New Jersey – February 4, 2021: On behalf of Make the Road New Jersey, Erika Martinez issued the following statement responding to Sen. Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Graham (R-SC) introducing the DREAM Act in the U.S. Senate.

“Today’s introduction of the Dream Act is a crucial first step in the right direction for nearly 2 million undocumented young people, but it cannot be the last. The previous administration’s attacks demonstrated that DACA is a vulnerable and temporary solution that puts thousands of lives at risk and we need permanent protections for all of us. Our members have been waiting for legislation that includes them. Throughout this pandemic, immigrants have been on the frontlines but many were excluded from any federal and local relief programs due to their status. We cannot be essential yet deportable. We will continue to push for meaningful legislation, one without trade-offs, which includes all 11 million undocumented immigrants who call this country home.”
