Make the Road New Jersey Urges Action on Drivers License Expansion for Immigrant NJers in Light of Historic New York Victory

After two members of the organization were detained by ICE when they could not present valid ID while driving, organization calls for action: “Our Families’ Futures are on the Line”

On behalf of the immigrant organization Make the Road New Jersey, leader Olga Armas issued the following statement:

“We applaud this historic victory for immigrants – and for everyone that cares about respect, dignity and safety – in New York. Now it’s time for New Jersey to expand access to driver’s licenses. This fight has been waged for more than a decade in NJ, and it has never been more urgent. A few weeks ago, two fathers and members of Make the Road NJ were arrested by ICE and separated from their families on a residential street in Elizabeth when they couldn’t present valid ID. Next week, we expect even more ICE raids in our communities. New Jersey must stand up now to expand access to licenses for immigrants like me and my family. Our families’ futures are on the line.”

Make the Road New Jersey builds the power of immigrant and working class communities to achieve dignity and respect through community organizing, legal services, policy innovation and transformative education.
