As Gov. Murphy Signs Drivers License Bill, Make the Road NJ Launches Spanish Language Website to Educate Community on New Law

About a half million undocumented immigrants in New Jersey will benefit from a new law that expands access to Drivers Licenses to All Qualified Drivers, Regardless of Immigration Status

The website: www.licenciasnj.org will help educate community members and new drivers about the law

(ELIZABETH, NJ – December 19, 2019): As Governor Murphy signs legislation that will expand access to drivers licenses to all qualified drivers, regardless of immigration status, Make the Road New Jersey, an immigrant rights organization, launched a new website to help education community members about the law. The website, www.licenciasnj.org will provide Spanish language information on the new law, which requires the Motor Vehicles Commission to begin issuing standard licenses available to all qualified drivers, regardless of status, by January 2021. New Jersey is poised to become the 15th state to expand access to licenses to all qualified drivers, regardless of immigration status. In states where the law exists, more individuals have become insured and road safety has improved.

“The new drivers license law is a landmark victory for immigrant communities who fought for years, and for road safety and families across New Jersey. We are launching LICENCIASNJ.ORG to help educate the community about the new law, and to make sure the nearly half million eligible New Jerseyans have access to correct, up to date information and do not fall prey to scams as we wait for the law to take affect,” said Olga Armas of Make the Road New Jersey.
