Malinowski Statement on Supreme Court

Travel Ban Ruling

Tuesday morning, the Supreme Court announced its decision to uphold President Trump’s Muslim ban in a 5-4 decision. Justices found that Trump’s repeated anti-Muslim rhetoric surrounding the bill was irrelevant to its overall purpose — which the administration claims is national security.

“Whether legal or not, the travel ban offends American values and recklessly endangers America’s security,” Tom Malinowski said.  “Not a single terrorist attack has been committed on our soil by people from the countries Trump targeted, and many of their citizens have given their lives alongside Americans to fight terrorism. A blanket ban on travel from these Muslim countries only reinforces the propaganda of our enemies that America is at war with their religion.”

There are over a quarter million Muslims in New Jersey, whom President Donald Trump falsely claimed on the campaign trail celebrated on 9/11 attacks.

“Freedom from persecution and discrimination based on nationality and faith is a bedrock of our democracy, and an ideal I championed as an Assistant Secretary of State,” Malinowski said. “To be safe at home and strong abroad, the United States must remain the shining city on a hill that people around the world respect and admire. President Trump has made clear he does not believe this. It is now up to Congress to act in defense of our most basic principles.”
