PRESS CONFERENCE: MARCH FROM COUNTY COURTHOUSE TO COUNTY JAIL TO DEMAND FREEDOM FOR JUSTIN RODWELL AND JUSTICE FOR RODWELL/SPIVEY BROTHERS
The People’s Organization For Progress (POP) will have a press conference to announce a march to demand freedom for Justin Rodwell and justice for the Rodwell/Spivey brothers who are currently facing trial.
The press conference will take place today, Wednesday, June 1, 2022, 11am, outside the Dr Martin Luther King Jr Justice Complex 495 Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd in Newark, NJ.
The purpose of the press conference is to discuss the “Free Justin Rodwell & Justice for the Rodwell/Spivey Brothers March & Rally.” It is scheduled to begin Saturday, June 11, 2022, 12 noon at Dr Martin Luther King Jr Justice Complex 495 Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd in Newark, NJ.
The marchers will proceed along a four mile route through Newark that will take them to the Essex County Correctional Facility where Justin Rodwell is being held. The Essex County Correctional facility is located at 354 Doremus Avenue in Newark, New Jersey.
The purpose of the march is to demand the release of Justin Rodwell who has been detained for a year without trial and justice for all of the Rodwell/Spivey Brothers whose trials are pending. Today, marks the one-year anniversary that Mr Rodwell has been in jail without trial.
“POP objects to the detention of Justin Rodwell for an entire year without trial. He was racially profiled, should not have been arrested and did not have to be detained,” stated Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress (POP).
The Rodwell/Spivey brothers were arrested and charged by Newark police last year. POP believes that the brothers were racially profiled and unjustly arrested. The group is calling for the charges against them to be dropped.
The Rodwell/Spivey brothers have been in pre-trial hearings for the past year. Their next court date will be Thursday, June 9, 2022, 9:00am, before Judge Michael L. Ravin, Essex County Veterans Courthouse, 50 West Market Street, 11th Floor, Newark, New Jersey. POP is also urging people to attend the court proceedings.
Among the speakers will be family members of the brothers, their attorney Cynthia Hardaway, and activists including Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress.
