Mayor Andre Sayegh and Mayor Reed Gusciora Call for the Swift Passage of A2426/S513

Paterson, NJToday, Mayor Sayegh and Mayor Gusciora issued a joint statement:

“A2426/S513 seeks to establish a rebuttable presumption of pretrial detention for defendants who commit certain violent crimes or firearm offenses under the Graves Act.

While we understand the importance of bail reform under the New Jersey Criminal Justice Reform Act, we must ensure that those who commit firearm-related offenses remain incarcerated. We are not seeking to end bail reform, we are seeking to amend it.

New Jersey’s urban centers have experienced a significant uptick in violence, particularly as it pertains to gun violence. This increase has put countless innocent bystanders in harm’s way. We fully support A2426/S513, and we believe this measure will increase safety in our respective cities.”
