MAYOR ANDRE SAYEGH CELEBRATES COURT DECISION RESTORING PATERSON’S POLICE DEPARTMENT TO LOCAL CONTROL

PATERSON, NJ – Mayor Andre Sayegh today praised the New Jersey Appellate Division’s decision to reverse the Attorney General’s supersession of the Paterson Police Department. The court’s ruling restores operational control of the department to the City of Paterson and reinstates Chief Engelbert Ribeiro to his position.

“This decision is a victory for local governance and the city of Paterson,” said Mayor Sayegh. “As a twice duly elected Mayor of Paterson, I have always maintained that the Attorney General’s takeover was both illegal and unconstitutional. This ruling reaffirms our city’s authority to manage its own police department and sets up a precedent for all municipalities across NJ that the responsibility of the police department rests on the local officials elected by the people.”

Mayor Sayegh highlighted the City’s ongoing commitment to addressing public safety and police accountability. “This moment allows us to move forward with a renewed focus on collaboration and the safety of every resident of Paterson,” he added.

The City will work swiftly to comply with the court’s directives and ensure a smooth transition of leadership and operations. Mayor Sayegh reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving public safety while respecting the rule of law.
