MAYOR BHALLA URGES HOBOKEN RESIDENTS TO FILL OUT 2020 CENSUS

On National Census Day, Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and the City of Hoboken are urging Hoboken residents to respond to the 2020 Census. Residents can respond to the 2020 Census over the phone, by mail or through an online questionnaire at http://www.2020census.gov. The self-response period runs until August 14 and filling out the questionnaire avoids the Census from contacting residents in the future.

“Now, more than ever, it’s so important for Hoboken residents to fill out the 2020 Census,” said Mayor Bhalla. “Hoboken will be asking for its fair share of funding from the state and federal government to help with the COVID-19 crisis, and the population determined by the census will have a major impact in determining what we receive. This is an easy way for residents to help our City while self-isolating from home, and I encourage everyone to complete the questionnaire as soon as possible.”

Every ten years the United States Census Bureau takes a snapshot of the country on April 1 to gather population data. This data then informs the distribution of over $675 billion dollars of federal funding for schools, infrastructure, healthcare, first responders, and so much more. The Census also determines Congressional, state, and local legislative district boundaries.

In 2010, Hoboken passed a critical threshold of 50,000 residents through the Census by 5 people. This resulted in tens of thousands of dollars for Hoboken and local non-profits over the past 10 years. As of March 30, only 37.5% of Hoboken households had responded to the Census.
