Mayor Fulop Continues to Advance Jersey City’s Police Department with Progressive Promotions

JERSEY CITY – This week Mayor Steven M. Fulop and Public Safety Director James Shea are promoting 17 Deputy Chiefs, 16 Captains, and 15 Sergeants within the Jersey City Police Department.  These latest promotions mark historic milestones as this Administration continues to break through barriers.  Included among them is Jersey City’s first female Deputy Chief, Patricia Cassidy, the first African American Captain in over a decade, and the very first Egyptian Muslim Sergeant in the history of the JCPD.

“We have focused our efforts on quality diversity recruitment, and continue to see positive results throughout all ranks,” said Mayor Fulop.  “These promotions help maintain our spot among the top police departments in the state in all categories including quality, diversity and size.  Under this new leadership, we expect to continue to see decreases in crime and increases in community relations and gun recoveries.”

This rising leadership will help oversee the 900-plus officers on the force citywide and continue the Administration’s goal to improve overall public safety and quality of life for all residents.

“Our Police Department currently has the highest staffing level in decades, therefore these promotions are necessary to continue our progress from the top ranks down to the recently hired recruits,” said Director Shea.

“Leadership is paramount to continue the department on the path we’re paving following the downward trends in violence and overall crime,” said Police Chief Michael Kelly. “We have high expectations of all of our law enforcement personnel.”

The 17 Deputy Chiefs were promoted on Tuesday. Captain and Sergeant promotions will take place today, August 9th, at 12 p.m. inside Council Chambers.  Media is welcome to attend.
