Mayor Gusciora Applauds Governor Murphy’s Actions on Trenton Initiatives

Trenton, NJ – Mayor Reed Gusciora applauded Governor Murphy’s signing of two priorities for Trenton: the return of the Capital City line item in the State budget and the approval of the Van Scivor project.

On Wednesday, Murphy signed into law the line item reinstating the Capital City Aid Program. During Governor Christie’s term, the Capital City Aid Program was replaced with the Transitional Aid Program which significantly reduced the amount of aid received from a peak of $37.5 million down to $9 million.

“This is a great advancement for the Capital City’s ability to maintain essential services, not only for our residents but for the 20,000 State workers who come into Trenton every day,” said Gusciora. “I applaud Governor Murphy’s commitment to reversing the damage done by the Christie Administration by reinstating the program. Likewise, Senator Shirley Turner, Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, and Assemblyman Anthony Verelli were great advocates for Trenton in getting this through the Legislature.”

Nearly 50% of property in Trenton is tax-exempt, most of which is owned by the State and would otherwise earn Trenton about $45 million each year in property taxes.

The Governor also signed off on the Van Sciver project. This project is about the reconstruction of the former Mill Hill Processing Center and the Van Sciver building. This complex will include 120 housing units (20% of which will be affordable rate units), restaurants, and retail spaces and will have access to the park and 168 parking spaces.
