Mayor Gusciora’s Statement per Past Weekend’s Shootings

Trenton N.J. – In response to the shootings this past weekend, Mayor Reed Gusciora issued the following statement:

“Since the incidents, I’ve been in constant contact with Police Director Pedro Medina. The Trenton Police Department (TPD) is doing all that they can in their investigation of this weekend’s tragic events.

I personally reached out to Governor Phil Murphy last night to advise him of these events. This afternoon, I met with the NJ Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, Mercer County Sherriff John Kemler, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri, State Police Colonel Patrick Callahan, and TPD Director Medina. While there are no overnight solutions to Trenton’s recent rash of gun violence, we have agreed to coordinate police resources so that we can have adequate personnel on the streets. Public safety is, was, and always will be, our top priority. Our police are working overtime to stop this inter-neighborhood violence and to take appropriate actions to lessen future instances of conflict.

In the short run, we need more cops on our streets. TPD higher-ups spent most of their day today interviewing prospective candidates who are ready to keep our peace and return us to Trenton’s historic policing levels.

In the long run, we need to address the societal issues which drive our youth against one another. Our children need access to equitable educational opportunities. They also need access to more engaging recreational and after-school programs. They need to be civically engaged in their City. The future belongs to those who are willing to make a positive difference, not those who embody hatred towards one another.

Our City needs to stay strong in the face of this violence. We all have a stake in Trenton’s future.”
