Mayor Gusciora’s Statement Regarding Jan. 29^th Homicide

Caring for Those Impacted ‘Will Continue to Be Our Priority’

Trenton N.J. – The Trenton Police Department (TPD) is currently investigating a homicide in the Chestnut Park neighborhood late last night. The incident is confirmed to have occurred (January 29^th) around 11:00 PM.

“At this time, we are gathering information regarding a homicide that occurred on Elm Street late last night.” Asserted Mayor Reed Gusciora, “TPD received reports of 2-3 gunshots just before 11:00 PM. Officers were immediately deployed and arrived on scene within minutes of the report.

“I met earlier this morning with Police Director Sheilah Coley and have been in constant contact with TPD regarding the incident,” continued Gusciora.  “We believe that this is a targeted act of violence and do not expect further acts of violence regarding the incident.”

Director Coley of TPD reported that Officers on scene found a female victim with a gunshot wound. Out of respect to the victim’s families, we will not be releasing further personal information at this time. TPD is working diligently with the Mercer County Prosecutors Office (MCPO) to apprehend our suspects and bring them to justice.

Officers are re-canvassing the now daylit area to uncover any evidence not collected last night.

“We are diligently working to apprehend any suspects and feel confident that they will be in custody shortly.”

TPD will continue to work with the victim’s families, area hospitals, and City Social Services to ensure that all are getting the care they need going forward.

Mayor Gusciora concluded that “gun violence is a symptom of systemic issues both in Trenton and throughout our state. Our public health and safety must come before anything else. Everything that can be done, is being done. And we will provide more information as it becomes available.”

As a community, the victim of this heinous crime will continue to be our priority. The emotional trauma did not end last night for those impacted, nor will it only effect those at the scene. Over the past year the Trenton Police Department has made it their mission to reduce gun violence and fully investigate such crimes.
