Mayor Issues Winter Storm Warning as Trenton Prepares for 12 Inches of Snow Wednesday Through Thursday

Trenton, N.J. – Mayor W. Reed Gusciora today announced that the City is preparing for an approaching winter storm system that could bring snow accumulation in excess of 12 inches and wind speeds of up to 35 mph to the region Wednesday morning through Thursday evening.

The City will apply liquid brine on roads 24 hours prior to snow fall. The Department of Public Works has already arranged two dozen salt and plowing vehicles across all four wards. The City also has 3,000 tons of salt available. Backup salt and vehicles are on stand-by should they be needed.

The City will commence plowing operations when snowfall reaches four inches. During the storm, Trenton residents will receive instructions from the City to move their vehicles from snow-emergency routes as required by City Ordinance 14-2.10. However, parking is available at public school parking lots for the duration of the storm. Residents can sign up for the City’s Emergency Broadcast System to receive updates on both when to move their cars to the school parking lots and when to return them to the street, among other important updates:

Trenton police officers will also drive through neighborhoods and use their public address systems to notify residents to move their vehicles from the emergency routes. Residents who do not comply will have their vehicles towed at their expense. Residents whose vehicles are towed can contact the Trenton Police Department non-emergency telephone number at 609-989-4170. Vehicles left in public school parking lots for at least three hours after the City notification may also be towed.

In addition, the Sewer Department is ready to clear storm water catch basins and drains throughout the city as the snow melts to help mitigate flood concerns. Residents are reminded to remove trash and debris from the curb and gutter areas to help keep storm water inlets clear of clogs.

The City will operate a warming center at Sam Naples Community Center located at 611 Chestnut Avenue starting tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. Transportation is available for residents who need it at 609-989-3460. Masks are required and social distancing will be enforced. The Rescue Mission located at 98 Carroll Street is also open 24 hours a day but can only accommodate single individuals.

The City also reminds residents to keep the following numbers nearby during the storm:

• Tenants who have no heat and cannot reach their landlord should call (609) 989-3560 and leave a message. An inspector from the City’s Department of Inspections will return their call.
• Residents that need emergency assistance should dial 911. Residents that need non-emergency assistance can reach the Trenton Police Department at (609) 989-4170.
• Power outages should be reported to PSE&G at 1-800-436-PSEG.
• Downed trees, flooding, and other weather-related damage should be reported to the Office of Emergency Management at 609-989-4200.
