Mayor Nicole Gillespie Announces Candidacy for New Jersey State Assembly
MOORESTOWN, NJ [November 18, 2024] — Moorestown Mayor Nicole Gillespie, a decorated Navy veteran and accomplished public servant, today announced her candidacy for the New Jersey State Assembly in the 7th Legislative District. Her established track record of leadership, fiscal responsibility, and deep commitment to community are foundational to her campaign and keys to her continued public service.
Mayor Gillespie’s service has extended well beyond Moorestown with roles on the board of the NJ Council of Mayors and the NJ League of Municipalities Legislative Committee. She has served on the Burlington County Minority and Equality Rights Task Force, as well as the boards of Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey and Contact of Burlington County supporting individuals in crisis.
“My career has been defined by service – from my time as a Naval officer to leading Moorestown through unprecedented challenges,” said Mayor Gillespie. “I will bring the same commitment to service and proven leadership experience to build on Dr. Herb Conaway’s remarkable 23-year legacy of service in the Assembly.”
First elected to Moorestown Council in 2018, Gillespie has served as Mayor since 2020. As Mayor, Gillespie championed economic development, promoted environmental conservation, and led efforts to meet the Township’s affordable housing obligation, all while bringing new revenue sources to minimize the burden on taxpayers. Under her leadership, Moorestown secured major grants for open space preservation, infrastructure improvements, and developed innovative solutions to revitalize the township’s commercial districts.
Her notable achievements include:
– Building a strong local economy through innovative development, including the redevelopment of Moorestown Mall into a mixed-use town center featuring healthcare facilities and residential units.
– Leading the township through the COVID-19 crisis without cutting government services to residents.
– Facilitating public-private partnerships to enhance community resources and engagement.
– Implementing the first affordable housing plan in over 20 years, creating more than 300 new affordable residences.
– Establishing initiatives to meet the needs of Moorestown’s diverse population, including seniors, working families and new residents.
A graduate of the US Naval Academy, Gillespie holds degrees in engineering and physics as well as a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. She has earned numerous awards for her service and accomplishments in Burlington County, including Scouting America’s Woman of Achievement Award in 2024, the Burlington County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 2024 Public Voice Award, the county’s 2023 Outstanding Woman of the Year in STEM, the 2022 NJ Federation of Democratic Women Outstanding Elected Official award and in 2020 was named one of NJBIZ’s Best 50 Women in Business.
“New Jersey faces complex challenges that require leaders who can bring people together and deliver real results,” Gillespie added. “I’ve demonstrated that ability in Moorestown, and I’m ready to bring that same collaborative, solution-focused approach to serving all 17 municipalities in the 7th Legislative District.”
