MCDC SUPPORTS REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM ACT (RFA); CALLS FOR MORRISTOWN CHAIR TO STEP DOWN

Morris County, NJ – The past week, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on a law that, if upheld, would ban abortions at 15 weeks, including in cases of rape or incest, and could overturn prior decisions in Roe and Casey, ending the constitutional right to abortion. This case and those like it in Mississippi and Texas are direct attacks on the rights and reproductive freedom of loved ones all around us.

As the Morris County Democratic Committee, we have a duty to choose representatives and party leaders who will support, protect, and expand equitable and quality access to reproductive rights in New Jersey and help make that a reality for every American. This is why we strongly urge Aaron Oliver to step down as chair of the Morristown Democratic Committee. Oliver’s actions as an anti-choice advocate do not align with the position of the Morris County Democratic Committee. “We condemn and do not stand by or support the recent activism of Aaron Oliver. Voters cannot have a chair who disregards the autonomy of women. This does not represent who we are, and therefore, he must step down immediately,” says Robin Gurin, Vice-Chair of the Morris County Democratic Committee.

Morris County Democratic Committee Chair, Chip Robinson, states “As a progressive chair of this party, I have always championed reproductive freedom and access to reproductive health care. This is paramount to the values of the MCDC and the Democratic Party. I strongly denounce the actions of anyone who advocates against legislation that would protect these crucial freedoms.”

Since 1992, more than 500 bills have been passed to restrict reproductive access. “As a woman and as a mother of two young women, I am terrified. We are in a critical moment. I will embrace my inner RBG and will fight for all of our daughters’ freedom of choice,” states Robin Gurin, “We are in a perilous time. As one of the leading progressive states in the nation, New Jersey can set an example by standing up to protect and expand equitable abortion and contraception access and shut down assaults on our rights.”

MCDC is committed to keeping our nation and county safe and to expanding equal opportunity for people of all backgrounds. Now more than ever, we need our volunteers, voters, and committee members to come together to do the hard work.

We urge you to contact your representatives and urge them to support the Reproductive Freedom Act (S3030/A4848) to expand and protect access to reproductive health care.
