McDonald’s and Mayor Ras Baraka Team Up to Hire 200 This Summer; Offer Education and Opportunity to Newark Employees

McDonald’s USA and its independent franchisees expect to hire more than 5,000 people in New Jersey this summer.

WHAT:              McDonald’s and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka are kicking off the summer hiring season with an event showcasing recent enhancements to McDonald’s comprehensive education program, Archways to Opportunity.

The Archways to Opportunity program provides eligible U.S. employees an opportunity to earn a high school diploma, receive upfront college tuition assistance, access free education advising services and learn English as a second language. McDonald’s recently announced it will enhance Archways by tripling tuition assistance for restaurant employees, lowering eligibility requirements from nine months to 90 days of employment, and dropping weekly shift minimums from 20 hours to 15 hours.

McDonald’s USA and its independent franchisees expect to hire more than 5,000 people in New Jersey this summer, with approximately 200 of those hires in Newark restaurants. With the recent expansion of the Archways program, a student starting out at their first summer job and working 15 hours per week will now be eligible for $2,500 of tuition assistance per year after only 90 days of employment.

Since Archways to Opportunity launched in 2015, nearly 500 New Jersey restaurant employees have been awarded more than $550,000 in tuition assistance. The latest changes to the program will allow many more employees to take advantage of the program.

PHOTO OP:      Media in attendance will also be able to capture photos and B-roll of Mayor Baraka serving customers via table service. McDonald’s is currently rolling out a new restaurant experience featuring enhanced levels of convenience, with new features like digital kiosks, mobile ordering, and table service. The new restaurant experience has created new hospitality positions such as the Guest Experience Leader.
