McKnight Statement on Strategic Merger Between New Jersey City University and Kean University
TRENTON – Senator Angela McKnight released the following statement in response to the New Jersey City University (NJCU) Board of Trustees' vote to pursue a strategic merger with Kean University.
“I am pleased to hear that New Jersey City University (NJCU) is taking the next step forward for the success of its students, faculty, and staff by pursuing a merger with Kean University. This strategic partnership represents a significant milestone in ensuring NJCU’s long-term stability and continued mission to provide accessible, high-quality education to a diverse and vibrant student body.
As this process moves forward, it is imperative that the merger maintains the integrity, identity, and mission of NJCU as an urban institution that prioritizes social mobility. I am confident that NJCU can navigate this transitional period in a way that safeguards its core values and creates opportunities for students and faculty to thrive. Kean University must be a partner in preserving the essence of NJCU, ensuring that its diverse student base continues to receive the support and resources necessary for success.
As this transition unfolds, I urge NJCU’s leadership to prioritize open dialogue with students, faculty, alumni, and the surrounding community. Their input is invaluable in shaping a merger that strengthens the university’s academic offerings, preserves its cultural identity, and provides financial stability without compromising the quality of education.
I look forward to continuing to support NJCU and Kean University through this transition and will remain committed to advocating for the needs of our students, faculty, and staff throughout this process.”
