Menendez Statement on 8th Anniversary of Superstorm Sandy

NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez released the following statement commemorating the eighth anniversary of Superstorm Sandy:

“Eight years ago, Superstorm Sandy ravaged the Jersey Shore, flooded rivers and streams beyond their banks, destroyed communities and devastated people’s lives.  It was the worst natural disaster to ever hit our state, but New Jerseyans have shown incredible grit and resolve to bounce back and build back better and more resilient.  While the recovery is not yet complete for many New Jerseyans, we have made tremendous progress over the years and will continue working until everyone has returned to their homes.

“Just as our state rallied together to show New Jersey was stronger than the storm, we must again unite as we face the worst public health and economic crisis in our lifetimes that, like Sandy, threatens the lives and financial security of our residents.  Together, we will beat COVID-19, rebuild our economy and institute the necessary reforms to ensure that we are better prepared and able to respond to future pandemics.

“I made a commitment to the people of New Jersey after Sandy struck that I would never stop fighting for them and the resources we need to fully recover, nor have I stopped pushing for comprehensive flood insurance and federal disaster response reforms to ensure what happened to Sandy survivors after the storm never happens again.  Likewise, I won’t stop fighting in Washington to make sure our residents, frontline essential workers, hospitals, schools, small businesses and communities get the federal assistance they need to defeat COVID-19 and put our economy on a glide path to recovery.”
