National Volunteer Week is time for thanks

Brian M. Hughes

Debt of gratitude goes to Mercer MRC

TRENTON — This week Mercer County observes National Volunteer Week (April 18-24), and COVID-19 has shown that there has never been a more important time to get involved in your community. The pandemic has presented unique challenges to all residents and businesses, and the power of volunteerism has been on full display in Mercer County. This year, Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes shines a spotlight on Mercer’s Medical Reserve Corps, a team of volunteers that collaborates with the Mercer County Department of Human Services to strengthen the county’s public health response and build resiliency during times of crisis, such as disease outbreak and natural disasters.

“In Mercer County, we have seen an outpouring of volunteerism and compassion throughout the pandemic, but few have helped guide us out of the darkness the way our Medical Reserve Corps volunteers have,” Mr. Hughes said. “I speak for many when I say how grateful we are for the volunteers who have given their time and talent to help conduct COVID-19-related outreach to all our citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, and who have stepped up and supported our efforts in virus testing, specimen collection, vaccination and phone bank hotlines.

“I believe everyone has something to give, and this week we recognize the contributions of all our volunteers and encourage others to use their talents and to pledge to serve their communities. Government alone cannot solve all problems, but by working together, we become stronger and more resilient,” Mr. Hughes added.
