Mikie Sherrill Calls on Congressman Frelinghuysen to Oppose Dangerous Concealed Carry Bill

The House of Representatives is voting on a concealed carry reciprocity bill today, which would weaken New Jersey’s gun laws. Nine major law enforcement groups including Major Cities Chiefs Association, the Police Foundation, and the Police Executive Research Forum, oppose concealed carry reciprocity and have written to Congress to oppose this bill.

Echoing law enforcement groups, former federal prosecutor, Navy veteran, and Democratic candidate for New Jersey’s 11th congressional district Mikie Sherrill released the following statement:

“Allowing untrained and unchecked individuals to carry concealed firearms in New Jersey is unconscionable. In the wake of some of the worst mass shootings in this country, weakening New Jersey’s existing gun laws and jeopardizing the work of law enforcement is not the answer. As a federal prosecutor, I worked every day with law enforcement and when those agencies tell us that this plan will not protect our communities–we must listen. More importantly, we need leaders in Congress who will fight to put the safety of our communities first. With this vote, Congressman Frelinghuysen has the chance to stand with his constituents and with New Jersey’s law enforcement agencies, and I call on him to vote no on this bill.”
