Mikie Sherrill statement on Repealing DACA
In response to President Trump’s announcement today that he will end DACA, former Navy pilot, federal prosecutor, and Democratic candidate for Congress Mikie Sherrill issues the following statement:
“To call President Trump’s decision to end DACA “demoralizing” doesn’t begin to describe the damage that repealing DACA will inflict on our nation, our economy, and our values. The majority of Americans believe that our country is one proudly built by immigrants. We protect our youth—including the ones who ended up here by no fault of their own—because we want to protect our future. The children protected under DACA are deeply committed to this country and are, by every standard, American.
Repealing DACA isn’t just un-American. It’s an attack on our economy and on our future. Deporting children would tear American families apart. It would cost us $60 billion now and $280 billion in the loss of economic job growth. New Jersey desperately needs that growth: we’re already behind the national average and are achieving far below our economic potential. Congress has had years to affect immigration reform. Our representatives must step up and work across the aisle in the next six months. We must protect the youth and the future of our economy.”
