Mikie Sherrill: Women in America are Dying Due to Trump Abortion Bans

WEST CALDWELL, NJ – Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement after reports that two women died after being denied emergency abortion care:

“Ever since Donald Trump’s hand-picked Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade I have said that women’s lives are in danger. We’re seeing the tragic consequences every single day with pregnant women in crisis being turned away from emergency rooms and now dying because of Trump abortion bans.

“This is not hyperbole. Women are being left to miscarry in public restrooms, bleed out in parking lots, and, in Georgia, two young women have died after they could not access timely, emergency abortion care. This not only threatens women’s lives, but also their health and ability to build and start a family in the future.

“These gut-wrenching deaths were preventable – and it should have been clear that these doctors had an obligation, both moral and legal, to provide critical care to these women when they needed it most. But, Trump’s patchwork of draconian abortion restrictions have created confusion and chaos for medical providers and will continue to cost women their lives and their health. That’s why I am leading a new resolution that affirms women are entitled to life-saving, emergency care – including abortion – and I will never back down from that fight to ensure women’s basic reproductive freedom.”

Last week, Mikie introduced a resolution affirming that the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) guarantees women access to life-saving care, including abortion. You can read more about her efforts in the Associated Press.
