Monmouth Freeholder Candidate Receives NJEA Endorsement

Monmouth County’s Democratic Candidate for Freeholder, Michael Penna, receives endorsement from the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA)

Monmouth County, NJ – September 3, 2019-

Monmouth County Freeholder candidate, Michael Penna, was honored to receive endorsement by the New Jersey Education Endorsement (NJEA.) The mission of the New Jersey Education Association is to advance and protect the rights, benefits, and interests of its members, and to promote a quality system of public education for all New Jersey students.

Michael said, “I am extremely proud to receive endorsement by the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA). It is an honor to receive the backing of my fellow educators and colleagues. I stand with them in ensuring that our students and future leaders are better educated to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Education is the backbone of our community and we must ensure that our county vocational schools and Brookdale Community College are given all of the resources they need to thrive. When elected to Monmouth County’s Freeholder board, I will do everything in my power to allocate funding to support my fellow educators and the support staff.”

Penna is an educator teaching Drama and English to at-risk and special needs children at Collier High School in Marlboro, NJ and he is a PhD candidate. He is dedicated to social justice and equality for all residents, he is a lifelong advocate for the disabled, and is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Penna says he is running for Monmouth County Freeholder to put an end to the one-party rule that has dominated Monmouth County for far too long. He said, “My daily commute brings me through areas of the county that enjoy great prosperity as well as areas challenged by poverty and need. For too long, our Freeholders have ignored these communities. I am running for Freeholder to be their voice and representative. I am devoted to preserving and protecting our environment. I am committed to expanding and ensuring access to desperately needed social services and to a quality education for all residents regardless of their zip code or the size of their bank account.”

As they campaign across Monmouth County, Penna and his running mate, Moira Nelson, are prioritizing local, non-partisan issues that involve education, the environment and the local

economy. A few examples include long-term, regional environmental planning including flood mitigation, shoreline erosion, and storm water strategies for municipalities, addressing concerns with the Monmouth County Reclamation Center and proposing long-term, “green” waste management solutions, funding mechanisms for Brookdale Community College and allocating funding to support educators and support staff, implementing harm-reduction solutions to tackle the overdose epidemic that is destroying families across the County, and funding social services appropriately so that no one is left behind.

Nelson, a Monmouth County native, drug policy reform advocate and long-time fashion industry executive, has been endorsed by Action Together New Jersey (ATNJ,) and Our Revolution- Monmouth County. Penna and Nelson are both endorsed by the Monmouth County Democratic Organization.
