MOUNTAIN LAKES BOROUGH COUNCIL CANDIDATES DECLINE FORUM INVITATION FROM LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS

LAKER SENSIBILITY CAMPAIGN DECLINES INVITATION TO
PARTICIPATE IN LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS SPONSORED DEBATE
MOUNTAIN LAKES, NJ, Release: September 14, 2020. For Immediate Release
Laker Sensibility, Republican candidates for the 2020 election for Borough Council for Mountain Lakes, announce today they have declined an invitation to participate in an upcoming candidate forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Mountain Lakes (LWVML). The candidates are running on a pro-business platform and pledge to restore “Laker Sensibility” emphasizing fiscal responsibility.
“We appreciated the invitation and looked forward to publicly sharing our platform and our ideas about restoring fiscal responsibility in Mountain Lakes. Unfortunately, we were unable to agree on several important matters with the LWVML and have decided not to participate,” said candidate Jane Hayward on behalf of the Laker Sensibility campaign. “We are close to finalizing an alternative non-partisan forum and look forward to sharing details shortly.”
Last year, Laker Republican Club (LRC) sent a blast email to members of the Mountain Lakes community announcing their formation and sharing their mission of creating a community political group focused on transparent and accountable local government, fiscal responsibility with taxpayer dollars, and environmental stewardship. A response was received from a LWVML Executive Board Member that included accusations of Republicans being racist, misogynist, anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigration, anti-environment, morally corrupt, and unethical.
According to Hayward, Laker Republican Club leadership (which includes current LWVML members and a past League President) contacted LWVML hoping the matter could be addressed. “Unfortunately, the matter was never resolved and LWVML did not condemn these biased and intimidating comments from their Executive Board Member,” added Hayward.
“As a Laker Republican Club volunteer, and a 25-year member of LWVML with 4 of those years as League President, I was disappointed in this response and disheartened that our current League leaders would not stand against this intolerance,” said Blair Schleicher Wilson, former Mayor of Mountain Lakes. “We understand the political acrimony consuming our nation at the moment, but certainly did not expect the tone, anger, and bias toward Republican neighbors from an Executive Board Member of LWVML. The League here in Mountain Lakes has sadly drifted from their mission of non-partisan engagement in government, and I support fully the decision of the Laker Sensibility team to seek an alternative venue for public participation.”
Election day is Tuesday, November 3, 2020. The Borough Council elections will be held concurrently with other local elections, statewide direct elections, and federal elections.
