Mukherji Legislation to Build Out Cybersecurity Infrastructure Wins Committee Approval
TRENTON – In an effort to keep pace with head-spinning technological advances in an ever-changing world, and protect New Jersey, its institutions, its infrastructure, and its people from the rising threat of would-be cyberattacks, the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee approved legislation sponsored by Senator Raj Mukherji that would establish the Office of Cybersecurity Infrastructure within the Executive Branch.
“In an era where global cyber threats represent a clear and present danger to our institutions and artificial intelligence technologies are rapidly evolving, this bill ensures that New Jersey not only protects its digital infrastructure but also leads in the responsible governance of artificial intelligence,” said Senator Mukherji (D-Hudson). “For example, the Office of Cybersecurity Infrastructure could mandate the implementation of recognized cybersecurity frameworks (such as NIST) across state government, require periodic independent risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities, and develop robust incident response plans.
“By bringing our cybersecurity protocols up to speed and establishing comprehensive AI oversight, we are protecting our residents and infrastructure and preparing coordinated defenses against cyberattacks that are sure to come.”
Under the bill, S-3835, the office would be headed by the Director of the Office of Cybersecurity Infrastructure, who would report directly to the Governor.
That office would be charged with establishing and implementing cybersecurity policies for the State; establishing, implementing, and monitoring technology infrastructure throughout the State; and finally, establishing clear and thoughtful AI policies in order for public and private entities to safely integrate AI into professional practices.
The bill was released from committee on a vote of 5-0.
