MURPHY ADMINISTRATION LAUNCHES ONLINE TRAIL USERS SURVEY AS PART OF EFFORT TO ENSURE IMPROVED ACCESS TO TRAILS

TRENTON – The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and New Jersey Department of Transportation have launched an online Trail Users Survey as part of the Murphy Administration’s efforts to expand and improve the public’s access to safe, inclusive outdoor recreation and active transportation opportunities throughout the state.

The online survey is the next phase of a public engagement effort to inform the Administration’s development of the New Jersey Trails Playbook, an innovative initiative designed to promote and facilitate trail projects across the state that ensure everyone has access to trails that meet their needs and abilities.

Members of the public and users of trails are asked to complete the survey by Friday, March 31. To take the survey in English, visit this survey link.  To take the survey in Spanish, visit this survey link.

“Access to quality trails for enjoyment, exercise, or to get to where you need to go is a fundamental right for everyone,” said Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette. “Trails should be safe spaces that connect our communities, boost our local economies, enhance our climate resilience, and support public health. I encourage the public to take a few minutes to complete this survey and help us advance a system of trails that serves the needs and priorities of all New Jersey residents and trail users.”

“Developing safe active transportation opportunities for everyone is a priority for the Murphy Administration,” said Department of Transportation Commissioner Fran O’Connor.  “NJDOT is committed to enhancing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure – including trails, shared used paths, and greenways – throughout the state. This survey will provide critical information to ensure we are designing or improving our trails so that they are safe and meet the needs of all users.”

About the Trail Users Survey

The New Jersey Trail User Survey is designed to help the agencies better understand the needs, priorities, and economic impact of existing and potential trail users. It is intended for all New Jersey residents, including those who do not use trails often or at all, as well as for visitors who use New Jersey’s trails.

Data collected in the New Jersey Trail User Survey will be used to shape funding, policy, and planning decisions for trails statewide. Through a series of multiple-choice questions, the survey addresses key topics, such as trail use, motivations for using or not using trails, and importantly, the impact that trails have on New Jersey’s economy. The findings of the survey will be used to inform the New Jersey Trails Playbook, which will help establish a framework for the future of New Jersey’s trails.

The Trail Users Survey follows the Trail Managers Survey launched in December to gather input from a variety of planners, local officials and volunteer organizations. The New Jersey Trail Users Survey takes approximately 12 minutes to complete. Participants may exit and return to the survey using the same device, with progress saved automatically.

About the New Jersey Trails Playbook

The New Jersey Trails Playbook is a series of statewide trail planning guidance documents being developed by NJDEP, in partnership with NJDOT, to provide consolidated resources on developing and connecting trails throughout the state.

The Playbook will provide a framework for advancing New Jersey’s trail networks, positioning the State to take on a more prominent leadership role in coordinating statewide trail development. The series takes a holistic, comprehensive approach to trail planning and guidance, allowing New Jersey to provide more equitable access to trails, greenways, shared use paths, and other related infrastructure, protecting and empowering our most vulnerable communities. The ultimate goal of this project is to provide a resilient statewide system of trails that better connects us to our communities, our businesses, nature, healthy lifestyles, and each other.
